When to convert JPG to PNG

JPG is the default photo format almost everywhere — cameras, phones, and most websites save images this way because it keeps file sizes small. PNG exists for a different job: when every pixel needs to be preserved exactly, or when the image needs a transparent background.

The most common reason to convert JPG to PNG is transparency. A JPG flattens any transparent area to a solid colour, usually white. If you are cutting out a product photo, preparing a logo, or building a graphic that needs to sit cleanly on different backgrounds, you need PNG's alpha channel — and the only way to add transparency to an existing JPG is to remove the background first, then save as PNG.

The second common reason is editing. JPG is a lossy format, which means every time it is saved it discards a small amount of image data. If you plan to open a file in an editor and save it repeatedly, working from a PNG avoids that gradual quality loss.

What converting will not do: a PNG made from a JPG does not recover any detail the JPG already lost during its own compression. PNG is lossless going forward, not a quality restoration tool. For website photos specifically, PNG is usually not the final format you want — it is larger than necessary for most images. Use PNG for logos, screenshots, and graphics with transparency; convert photos to WebP instead for faster page loads.

Frequently Asked Questions

PNG uses lossless compression, meaning no quality is lost. PNG also supports transparent backgrounds, which JPG does not. Use PNG when you need exact image quality or transparency for logos and graphics.
Yes, PNG files are typically larger than JPG because they use lossless compression. If file size is a priority, use our Image Compressor after converting. If you need web performance, consider WebP format instead.
Yes. All conversion happens in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to any server. They stay completely private on your device.
